What is speech pathology?

Speech pathology, often called speech therapy, helps people who find communication hard. That can mean saying sounds clearly, understanding what other people say, putting words and sentences together, joining in conversations or speaking fluently. Speech pathologists are university-trained allied health professionals. They assess communication difficulties, explain what is going on, and work with you on practical goals that matter in everyday life.

How speech pathology can help

Our speech pathologists work on:

  • Speech sounds: helping people say sounds and words clearly so others can understand them.
  • Language: building understanding of what is said, and the words and sentences used to share ideas.
  • Late talkers and early communication: supporting toddlers and preschoolers who are slow to start using words, gestures or play to communicate.
  • Social communication: conversation skills, turn-taking, reading body language and building friendships.
  • Stuttering: strategies that support smoother, more confident speech.
  • Early literacy: the sound awareness skills that sit underneath reading and spelling.
  • Alternative and augmentative communication (AAC): tools and strategies, such as picture systems and communication devices, for people who need support beyond spoken words.

Who we support

We work with people across the lifespan, and the goals look different at each stage.

  • Toddlers and preschoolers: early words, play-based communication, understanding instructions, and coaching for parents and carers to use at home.
  • School-age children: clearer speech, language for learning, social skills with peers and literacy foundations.
  • Teenagers: communication for friendships, study and growing independence.
  • Adults: communication for everyday life, work and community participation.

Some of the people we support have autism, ADHD, developmental delay or another disability. Others have no diagnosis at all. You can ask about an assessment whether or not you have a diagnosis, and we welcome self-referrals from parents, guardians, support coordinators and adults seeking support for themselves.

What to expect: assessment and therapy

Assessment. Your first appointment is about understanding the person in front of us. Your speech pathologist will talk with you about your concerns and goals, observe how communication works in conversation or play, and use assessment tools where they suit. You will leave with a clear explanation of what we found and what we recommend. If you need a written report, for example for an NDIS plan review, you can discuss this at the assessment.

Therapy. Therapy is built around the goals we set together. Sessions are practical and tailored, using play with younger children and everyday conversation with older clients. We coach parents, carers and support workers on strategies to use at home. With your consent, we also liaise with teachers and other health professionals so everyone is working towards the same goals. We review progress regularly and adjust the plan as things change.

Working with our other services. Many people benefit from more than one type of support. Posity also offers occupational therapy and play therapy, so your speech pathologist can coordinate with colleagues in the same team.

Speech pathology and the NDIS

Posity is a registered NDIS provider. Speech pathology is usually funded through the Capacity Building supports in a participant’s plan, where it relates to their disability-related goals. What you can access depends on your individual plan and circumstances, so please speak with our administration team about how your funding can be used. If you are not on the NDIS, our team can talk you through your options.

Occupational therapy focuses on taking part in everyday activities such as self-care, learning, sensory processing and emotional regulation. Speech pathology focuses on communication. Some people see both.

It depends on age and goals, but parents and carers are an important part of therapy. We involve them and coach them on what to practise at home.
